Should You Tip Your Professional Movers

Families in Vancouver, British Columbia (or in other cities across Canada) who have used professional movers will tell you that it was money well spent. The level of efficiency and coordination exhibited by professional movers like Premiere Van Lines is sure to make moving a lot less stressful.

When you choose a professional mover, one of their trained moving consultants will work with you to develop a unique moving plan that meets all of your needs. Service options will be presented that will save you money and ensure that the move is completed on time and on budget.

Anyone who has ever done a “DIY” move can attest to the fact that moving is hard, back-breaking work. There is also a real possibility that someone will get hurt trying to move heavy or awkward furniture out of or into a home. Unless you have been trained on how to perform these tasks properly and safely, you really shouldn’t attempt to do it on your own. If you or one of your helpers gets injured, this can mean time off work and perhaps chiropractic or physiotherapy sessions which can cost you dearly. Using a professional mover instead is a smart decision.

One question that comes up often about moving is “should you tip your movers?” The answer is tied to the level of service and degree of satisfaction experienced. As service providers, movers do not expect a tip, however, receiving a gratuity is very much appreciated.

Moving is definitely a very unique service that requires a lot of physical effort from the crew; often in less than ideal conditions. Consider how difficult it is to move furniture and other household possessions over slippery walkways in the dead of winter or during a hot, humid summer day.

The average household has at least 8,000 lb. of items to be moved while others have considerably larger shipments. That is a lot of lifting, carrying and walking. Most families have at least a few items that are very awkward to move, so it is important that the movers hired are properly trained so they do not damage any of the items or the property.

Another factor in assessing whether you want to tip your moving crew relates to “attitude”.  Movers who are friendly, cooperative and respectful of you and your belongings make moving day a lot less stressful. Professional movers try to hire individuals who have these attributes in addition to their moving skills.

Many people do not realize that the moving crew only receives a small percentage of the amount you are paying for the move, so receiving a tip for excellent service is really appreciated. The moving company has to cover their overhead expenses including trucks, warehousing, office personnel, insurance, workers compensation premiums and other costs involved in operating a moving company.

Here are a few guidelines to consider when deciding how best to treat your movers:

  1. Provide water, soft drinks or coffee to the crew
  2. Tip between $20.00-$40.00 per crew member for moves that take 8 plus hours
  3. Tip van foreman $30.00 -$50.00
  4. If you have a large household, awkward items or difficult access then the tip should be a bit higher
  5. Give cash tip to each person individually. It will make them feel good to know that their hard work was recognized.
  6. Do not provide beer or other alcoholic drinks to movers even on the hottest day. Professional moving companies have strict rules about their personnel drinking on the job even if they are done for the day. It may seem like a nice gesture but it could result in the firing of a good employee.

Testimonials

The movers went beyond the scope of their job and paid special attention to details that I had pointed out on pieces of furniture and areas in my home.  I am proud to say that with Neil West and his crew, I will certainly refer Premiere Van Lines to friends, clients buying and selling and to employees in my company.  Thanks once again for all your help.
