How to Prepare Specialized and Small Vehicles for Moving
Vehicle moving extends beyond moving the family car, SUV or mini van. Families in Winnipeg, Manitoba (or other cities) often have various types of vehicles that must be transported to their new home. Motorcycles, ATVs, boats, trailers, scooters, go carts and other types of specialized vehicles can be part of a household goods move.
In most cases, these types of vehicles can be put on the moving van along with your furniture and other household possessions and can be transported safely to destination. As with all of your belongings, getting your vehicles moved without incurring any damage is the primary goal. This is why utilizing the services of a professional moving company that has the right equipment (including loading ramps) and expertise is your best choice.
Motorcycles in particular can be very expensive, especially some of the newer touring bikes and thus require extreme care. The last thing you want to happen is for your motorcycle to get damaged while it is being moved. A professional mover like Premiere Van Lines knows how to properly protect these types of vehicles.
If the motorcycle is extremely valuable, we can build a custom crate for it. Otherwise it will be properly secured on the truck with a wheel chock to keep the handle bars from moving and ratchet straps affixed to the floor/sides of the trailer to ensure it doesn’t fall over during transit. Once properly secured all specialized vehicles are carefully padded with clean moving blankets to protect them from any scratches to the paint.
Prior to turning your motorcycle or other specialized vehicle over to the mover, there are a few things you must do in advance:
- Make sure the vehicle is in good working condition
- Clean your vehicle thoroughly
- Note any pre-existing damage
- Take photos of the vehicle from several angles including close-ups of any damage
- Secure or remove any loose parts or accessories
- Only have approximately one quarter tank of gas in the vehicle
- Properly inflate tires
- Check for any fluid leaks (have repaired before transport)
- Purchase mover’s cargo coverage
Prior to loading your motorcycle or other small or specialized vehicle, the moving company will perform a visual inspection and prepare a written inventory that notes any pre-existing damage. Be sure to review their notations to ensure you agree with the existing condition of your vehicle.
If you are moving an item that is too large to fit on the moving van (i.e. a speed boat or sailboat), Premiere Van Lines can make arrangements for transportation by a carrier who specializes in that type of commodity.
