Packing for a move takes planning. A professional mover knows how to pack and what to pack in each size carton. When homeowners do their own packing, many boxes are too heavy and the bottoms fall out when lifted or items get crushed in the cartons as there is not enough support at the top of the box.
The rule of thumb is to pack heavier items in small boxes and lighter items in big boxes. Each carton should not weigh more than 50 pounds/ 22 kilos otherwise no one will be able to lift it including the mover.
Here are some tips to help you pack like a pro:
- Purchase packing cartons, paper, and tape from a professional mover like Premiere or a retailer who sells moving supplies
- Tape the bottom of the box for extra support and put a layer of packing paper on the bottom
- Ensure the top of the box is stuffed with paper to keep the top from caving in or being crushed
- Tape the top shut after you have finished packing each carton or bin
