The biggest part of moving is decluttering, listing your home, selling it and finding a new home. Whew, time to relax right? Well, you are almost there!
The next step is contacting a professional mover. The more notice you can give a mover in the busy summer months, the better your move will be. This is especially important if you are moving cross country.
We recommend that you contact movers at least 45 days in advance if you are moving in the summer or early fall as professional movers book up fast. If possible, try to stay away from closing at the end of the month as this is one of the busiest times for moves. If you are moving in the slower winter months, 30 days notice is usually sufficient.
Beware; there are a number of rogue movers in Canada. They have slick web sites and offer people low prices that are substantially less than credible movers. Rogues do a good job of fooling people into thinking they have chosen a professional mover. If you search on-line, the chances are 50% of the movers listed will be rogue movers. Before you call or contact a moving company, check with the Canadian Association of Movers. Only professional, credible movers can belong and they all must abide by a code of conduct.
Be sure to get your moving quotes in writing. Confirm the dates, the services included, the price and if Replacement Value Protection coverage is included in the quote. There is an extra cost for this.
If you plan to do your own packing, start early. Many people are still packing when the movers show up and this can cause a delay in loading and extra charges. An option is to have the mover pack your breakable items. This will save you time and your breakables will be properly protected for the move.
