A professional mover will do a thorough review of what is to be moved so they can give you an accurate quote. Their quote should clearly outline what the mover will perform, the specific costs for each service and the pickup and delivery dates.

Local Move

If the distance from your current home to your new home is under 150 miles/ 244 km it’s considered a local move. This type of move is normally charged on an hourly basis or when it is more economical to do so, by weight and distance.

The number of men and the type of the truck will depend on the size of your home and if you’re moving to or from an apartment or condo. The hourly rate starts when the crew leaves the mover’s yard and returns after the move. The return time is calculated using the same time it took to arrive at your residence.

The more prepared you are for a local move, the less time it will take. Have beds disassembled and everything packed in cartons or totes including lamps and lamp shades. Make sure the cartons and totes are taped closed. If you live in a condo or apartment book the elevator far in advance.

Full Replacement Value transit protection is available for your local move. There is an extra cost for this but well worth it. Check with your home insurer to see if you are covered for a move. If not, ask the mover to include a price for Full Replacement Value coverage.

Long Distance Move

This is a move over 150 miles/ 244 km. The cost is determined by the weight of your shipment, the distance to your new residence and extra services. A credible moving company will have a moving consultant do a visual survey of the goods to determine the weight. On their written estimate it should include:

  • Estimated weight
  • Transporation cost
  • Mileage
  • Pick- up and delivery dates
  • Transit protection cost
  • Fuel surcharge – this amount varies weekly based on fuel costs
  • Extra services such as packing cartons, crating of marble or high value items, shipping a vehicle or storage costs (if required), elevator or long carry charges and a shuttle service if applicable

Long distance moves are serviced by tractor- trailers which can be up to 70’ in length. A smaller truck may be used to shuttle the items from your home to the big highway unit if there are access difficulties at your current home or your new home. This includes overhanging wires or trees, turn access to the street or parking lot and the width/length of the street.

The final charges for your move will be based on the scaled weight of your shipment and extra services that were performed. Be sure to ask for a copy of the scale tickets for your move.
