Moving across the country is quite different than moving across the city. The way your shipment is loaded is different, and so is the pricing.
Moving companies who can handle a cross country move
Many local movers only service short-distance moves due to the amount of equipment and manpower required. A long-distance moving company normally handles all types of moves: local, cross country, Canada to the USA, and overseas. In most cases, they will be affiliated with a well know, national moving van line.
Cost
Cross-country moves are priced on the weight of your shipment and the distance from your current home to your new home (weight and mileage). A professional moving company will send a moving consultant to your home to look at the items being moved so they can determine an estimated weight. Once they have this, they can give you an accurate moving quote in writing.
Rogue movers
If you do price shop online, be very cautious of a lowball price much lower than the rest. This is a red flag that it is a rogue mover. Check with the Canadian Association of Movers to ensure the mover you are getting a quote from is a member. This is the ONLY organization in Canada that pre-vets moving companies, and every member must agree to abide by a professional code of conduct.
Delivery on a cross-country move
Highway moving trailers are 53’ in length and can hold 30,000 pounds or more of household goods. Professional movers use a transit guide to establish delivery dates. The transit guide gives the driver time to load enough shipments to fill up the trailer, and deliver along the way.
The delivery date or delivery time period will be included in your moving contract. When you use a professional moving company, you will be eligible for out-of-pocket expenses, including accommodation and food, if your shipment is late.
