Moving is an exciting and hectic time with so many details to remember. To help, here is a list of everyday things people overlook when they are moving:
Packing day
Have a clear workspace available for the packers. Point out fragile valuable items, items you will be taking with you, and anything to be left for new owners.
Label boxes
If you are doing your own packing, put a label on each carton as to the general contents and the room it belongs to. This will make it easier and will save time on the move-in day.
Arrange a babysitter for moving day
Ask a family member or neighbour if they will watch your children during the move. This will keep them safe and save time on the move.
Arrange to have pets looked after
As the movers will be lifting heavy items and walking backward in some cases, it is dangerous to have pets underfoot. The door will be open throughout loading and unloading, and pets can get spooked and run out. If there is no one to look after your pets, put them in a contained area with a door, like a bathroom or a laundry room.
Parking area for movers
Depending on the size of your move, the movers will have anywhere from a 24-foot truck to a 52-foot trailer. Ask your neighbours ahead of time if they can park on the street in case their driveway is blocked by the trailer. The crews need to have the truck/trailer as close as possible to your home to avoid a long carry.
In some cities, a parking permit may be required for the truck. It is up to the customer to arrange for this permit with their local municipality/town.
Move out day
- Ensure the moving crew has a clear path to each room.
- Once the crew has finished loading, do a final check for overlooked items in closets, storage areas, cupboards, garage, and shed.
- Make certain windows and doors are locked, utilities are discontinued or turned off, keys are transferred, and the lights are out.
