To a long-distance moving company, a small shipment is considered anything below 2,500 lbs./1,134 kilos. This could be a small apartment move, a student, someone who is only moving boxes, or an estate sale where the family is splitting up the items and shipping them to various family members.
The cost of a long-distance move is based on the weight of your shipment and the distance to your new home. Most moving companies have a minimum weight charge during the year for small shipments. However, the minimum weight may be different in the non-peak moving season (Sept-May) than in the peak season (June-Aug).
For small loads, the big highway truck will usually take your shipment to their moving company location closest to your new home. This moving company is called the destination agent, and they will deliver the shipment to you in a smaller truck.
Depending on where you live, there may be an extra charge to pick- up or deliver your small shipment. This mainly applies to remote areas or metropolitan centres where there is heavy traffic and traffic delays. This is to cover the additional labor costs and the truck and fuel costs during the travel time to and from your home.
If you are moving a small load to or from an apartment or condo building, book the elevator and loading dock ahead of time as they book up fast in the summer months.
