A binding estimate or price guarantee in moving is a written agreement that sets the total price you’ll pay for a move based on the services and items listed in the estimate. If nothing changes, you pay the agreed-upon amount—even if the mover’s actual costs end up being higher or lower.

How it works

Fixed Price

The cost is locked in for the amount of inventory and services described in the estimate. If the mover underestimated the weight, time, or labor required, you generally still pay the fixed/binding estimate amount.

If you add items, request extra services (such as packing or storage), change the pickup or delivery details, or there are access issues that weren’t disclosed (e.g., extra flights of stairs or a shuttle truck is required), the mover will issue a revised estimate to cover the additional costs.

The estimate is only binding if it’s based on an accurate list of what you’re moving. Omitting items can result in additional charges.

For example:

  • A mover gives you a binding/guaranteed price of $3,500 to move a two-bedroom home.
  • On moving day, the job takes longer than expected.
  • As long as you’re moving the same items and receiving the same services, you still pay $3,500.
  • If you decide to add a piano that wasn’t included in the estimate, the mover can charge extra for that addition.

This differs from other estimate types:

Non-binding estimate

The quoted price is an approximation, and the final bill may be higher or lower based on the actual weight or services provided.

Binding/Not-to-exceed estimate

You won’t pay more than the quoted amount, but if the actual cost is lower, you pay the lower amount. This can be the most consumer-friendly option when it’s available.

If you’re planning a move, it’s a good idea to review the estimate carefully and make sure it clearly lists:

  • The inventory of items being moved.
  • All included services.
  • Any circumstances that could result in additional charges.
  • Whether the estimate is binding/guaranteed, non-binding, or guaranteed not-to-exceed.
