When it comes to packing delicate kitchenware, dishes, glassware, and ceramics are among the most breakable items. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to move fragile kitchenware without breaking it:
Gather Packing Supplies
Before you begin, collect all the materials you’ll need:
- Sturdy moving boxes (preferably double-walled)
- Packing paper or unprinted newspaper
- Bubble wrap
- Packing tape
- Markers for labeling
Prepare Each Box
Reinforce the bottom of each box with extra packing tape. In Addition, line the bottom with crumpled packing paper to create a cushion.
Wrap Each Item Individually
Wrap plates, bowls, and glasses individually in packing paper or bubble wrap. For extra protection, use a double layer, especially for thin or valuable items. Secure the wrapping with tape if needed.
Plates: Stack vertically like records, not flat, to reduce breakage.
Glasses and stemware: Fill each piece with crumpled paper, then wrap and place upright in boxes.
Lids: Wrap lids separately and pack them with their respective containers.
Packing Cartons
Place heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter, more fragile items on top. Fill gaps with crumpled paper to prevent shifting.
- Don’t overpack boxes; leave enough room for padding, but not so much that items can move around.
- Don’t under-pack either—a half-empty box can collapse if stacked.
Label Everything
Clearly mark each box with “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP.” List the room and its general contents to make unpacking easier, e.g., Kitchen – Glassware.
Load With Care
When loading boxes onto the moving truck, keep fragile kitchenware upright and avoid stacking heavy items on top. Place these boxes last, so they’re first off and handled with extra care.
Unpacking
Take your time unpacking fragile kitchenware. Open boxes on a flat surface, remove items one at a time, and put them away in the cupboards.
