There are many factors to consider when putting together a moving budget. We like to break it down to pre-move, move, and post-move when calculating the cost of moving and factors for budgeting your move:

Pre-Move Costs

  • Housecleaning cost
  • Deposits for setting up utilities
  • Mail forwarding
  • Packing supplies

Move Out and Move In

If you are hiring professional movers, the cost will depend on the move you are making:

Local move – within the same city/area

  • Usually priced by the hour. The hourly rate depends on the truck size required for your move and the number of crew members.
  • If you plan to have the movers pack and unpack your belongings, there will be an additional cost. This is charged by the carton or the estimated weight of your move, whichever is less.
  • Cargo protection coverage – to protect your shipment in transit in case of fire, accident, or damage.

Long-distance move – over 244 km (150 miles) or across the province/country

  • Priced by the weight of your shipment and the distance from your current home to your new home.
  • If you plan to have the movers pack and unpack your belongings, there will be an additional charge, either by the carton or by the estimated weight of your shipment, whichever is less.
  • Cargo protection coverage – to protect your shipment in case of fire, an accident, or damage.
  •  If you are driving or flying, budget for airfare, gas, lodging, and meals.

Do-it-yourself-move (DIY)

  • Truck rental cost, fuel, and mileage cost (if you exceed the limit)
  • Equipment rentals for furniture pads, dollies, appliance carts, and straps,
  • Food, water, and coffee for your helpers.

To save time and money on each type of move, go through your home and declutter. Moving unwanted items will add to the cost of your move. Sell, donate, or give-a-way furniture or décor items you no longer want.

In addition, pre-planning will help you save money. Do a floor plan layout to see if your current furniture fits your new home.

Finally, plan for the unexpected and have a contingency. If your closing is delayed, you may need to hold your furniture on the moving truck for a day or more, or if the delay is longer, you may require short-term storage. This could add hundreds or even thousands to your move costs.
